The New England Patriots and New York Giants will face off in week four of the preseason on Thursday. The Giants are hoping to end up 2-2, while the Patriots are hoping to finish with a 3-1 record prior to the regular season. It's unlikely we'll see much action from the starters as they got their work in during the third preseason game, but there's plenty of roster spots and backup jobs up for grabs.

Teams will have to cut down from 75 to 53 players on Saturday, and that process begins with evaluations based on this game.

Meet the Patriots

The Patriots are one of the most stable teams in the NFL, and as such, there aren't really any starting spots up for grabs on Thursday. There are, however, some exciting young players that are deserving of your attention. Wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins has been absolutely fantastic thus far in the preseason.

In New England's third preseason game, Thompkins hauled in eight catches for 116 yards, including two receptions of more than 25 yards each. He's an undrafted rookie, so he's not among those that will likely sit this one out in preparation for the regular season, so watching him make another bid for a roster spot and playing time will certainly be interesting.

Meet the Giants

There are many players vying for spots on the Giants' roster. The spots are definitely there, but there are an awful lot of players in line. Quarterbacks David Carr and Curtis Painter are vying for a backup spot, though both could possibly be out of a job. Da'Rel Scott and Ryan Torain are battling at the running back position. There might only be one receiver spot open for one of Kevin Hardy and Ramses Barden, as well.

Don't expect to see much of the Giants starters in this one.

Nassib, the rookie quarterback from Syracuse taken by the Giants in the fourth round of the2013 NFL Draft, is just 3-of-10 for 77 yards in two preseason appearances. He has been sacked four times.

US-based entrepreneur Elon Musk has unveiled his proposed near-supersonic "Hyperloop" transport concept to link Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The SpaceX, Tesla and PayPal founder envisions using magnets and fans to shoot capsules floating on a cushion of air through a long tube.

If the Hyperloop is ever built, a trip on it between the two California cities would last about 30 minutes, he said.

But Mr Musk says he is currently too busy to develop the project himself.

In a paper outlining the Hyperloop proposal, Mr Musk suggested the solar-powered system would be a faster, safer, less costly, and more efficient mode of transport between Los Angeles and San Francisco than the high-speed train currently under development.

"Short of figuring out real teleportation, which would of course be awesome... the only option for superfast travel is to build a tube over or under the ground that contains a special environment," he wrote.

'$20 a ticket'

Mr Musk estimated the system linking the two cities, which are 380 miles (610km) apart, would cost $6bn (£3.9bn).

Capsules could depart as often as every 30 seconds and could also carry cars, travelling at up to 760mph (1,220 km/h), nearly the speed of sound.

Passengers seated in cabins inside the capsules would experience slightly more than the force of gravity, more like on an aeroplane than a roller coaster, he said on a conference call.

He said he would likely build a prototype of the concept, but not immediately, as he is busy with his commercial space project SpaceX.

A demonstration model would take up to four years to complete, he said.

He said the concept would best work between cities closer than 1,000 miles, because beyond that supersonic air travel would be preferable.

But for the shorter distance, his new concept would beat the plane, he argues, because it would not waste time ascending and descending.

The San Francisco to Los Angeles route would be elevated alongside a current California motorway, which would enable it to be constructed with minimal disputes over land rights, Mr Musk said. The tube and supporting columns would be designed to withstand earthquakes.

He estimated a trip would cost $20 (£13).

A sinkhole caused a section of a central Florida resort villa to partially collapse early Monday, while another section of the villa was sinking, authorities said.

About 30 per cent of the three-story structure collapsed around 3 a.m. Monday, Lake County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Tony Cuellar said. The villa at the Summer Bay Resort had already been evacuated and no injuries were reported.

Cuellar said authorities were also concerned about another section of the villa, which was sinking.

The sinkhole, which is in the middle of the villa, is about 40 to 50 feet in diameter, Cuellar said. He said authorities think it was getting deeper but couldn't tell early Monday if it was growing outward.

The villa houses 24 units and about 20 people were staying in it at the time, Cuellar said.

Authorities were called to the scene, about 10 miles west of Disney World, late Sunday where they found that the building was making popping sounds and windows were breaking.

A nearby villa was also evacuated as a precaution, Cuellar said.

Cuellar said there was a gas leak but the gas has since been shut off.

Witnesses told The Associated Press they could hear a cracking sound as the villa began sinking. A large crack was visible at the building's base.

Luis Perez, who was staying at a villa near the sinking one, said he was in his room when the lights went off around 11:30 p.m. He said he was on his way to the front desk to report the outage when he saw firefighters and police outside.

"I started walking toward where they were at and you could see the building leaning and you could see a big crack at the base of the building," said Perez, 54, of Berona, N.J.

The man suspected of kidnapping 16-year-old Hannah Anderson and killing her mother and brother was shot dead in Idaho as the girl was rescued, authorities said Saturday.

James Lee DiMaggio 40, was killed by an FBI tactical agent during an arrest attempt near Morehead Lake in a remote area of Idaho known as the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, authorities said.

Her father was "elated" his daughter was found alive, San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore said at a news conference. Hannah, who "appears to be in good shape," was removed from the area by helicopter and transported to a hospital in Idaho, Gore noted.

The confrontation between DiMaggio and the FBI happened after a campsite was spotted from the air, Gore said. DiMaggio was killed around 4:22 p.m. PT (7:22 p.m. ET), but it was unclear if he fired at agents. Gore, speaking in San Diego, and FBI agent Mary Rook and Valley County Sheriff Patty Bolen, speaking in Idaho, declined to discuss details of the operation.

Federal and local law enforcement spent Saturday combing the wilderness in search of Hannah and her suspected kidnapper after finding DiMaggio's car the day before. With air support and on horseback, they scoured the isolated area, dotted by only a few scattered cabins and limited cell phone service.

Officials suspect that DiMaggio set fire to his own house Sunday, killing Hannah's 8-year-old brother, Ethan, and their mother, Christina Anderson, 44. They suspect he then kidnapped Hannah, setting off a search that expanded to Canada and Mexico.

Amber Alerts were issued in Oregon and Washington on Wednesday after DiMaggio’s car was believed to have been spotted in Northern California. An alert was also posted in Nevada on Thursday. 

A horseback rider told authorities he saw an adult man and teenage girl hiking near Morehead Lake on Wednesday evening. He told police the couple seemed odd, but did not strike him as dangerous.

After the rider's report, authorities found DiMaggio's car, a Nissan Versa, covered with brush and without license plates six to eight miles away from where the two had been spotted. The area is east of the city of Cascade and northeast of Boise.

Sheriff's officials told NBC San Diego that Christina Anderson had a “close platonic relationship” with DiMaggio. Neighbors told the station DiMaggio had he moved to the area five years ago. A neighbor told The Associated Press that Christina and her husband, Brett Anderson, had recently separated.

The owner of a shop in Zurich where US talk show host Oprah Winfrey says she encountered racism has called the incident a "misunderstanding".

Winfrey, one of the world's richest women, claimed an assistant refused to serve her in an upmarket handbag shop.

She was apparently told one of the bags on display was "too expensive" for her.

Shop owner Trudie Gotz told the BBC that Winfrey was "absolutely allowed" to look at the $35,000 (£22,500) bag, which was kept behind a screen.

"My salesperson wanted to give her the handbag in her hand. But she didn't want to take the bag," claimed Gotz.

She said her assistant had worked in the Trois Pommes store "for a few years and takes care of the most spoilt customers from all over the world", adding, "she is really a correct sales person".

'Didn't understand'

Winfrey, who stars in Lee Daniels' new film The Butler, visited Zurich last month to attend singer Tina Turner's wedding. Her programme The Oprah Winfrey Show is not shown in Switzerland.

Speaking to US TV show Entertainment Tonight, she said: "I go into a store and I say to the woman, 'Excuse me, may I see the bag right above your head?' and she says to me, 'No. It's too expensive.'"

The star made an estimated $77m last year

When Winfrey insisted, the shop assistant allegedly replied: "No, no you don't want to see that one, you want to see this one because that one will cost too much. You will not be able to afford that."

The star said she left the shop calmly without arguing, but that the experience was proof that racism continues to be a problem.

"There's two different ways to handle it," she said.

"I could've had the whole blow-up thing... but it still exists, of course it does."

Ms Gotz did not call into question Winfrey's perception of the events.

"I didn't take care of [Winfrey]. I'm sure she felt like this - but my salesgirl promised me she took care of [her] really the best she could. So it must have been a misunderstanding," she said.

Ms Gotz said her assistant spoke both Italian and English, "but her English isn't as good".

"She tried to show Mrs Oprah the same style in other qualities, because maybe she didn't understand what she wanted."

Winfrey's claims come amid a political row over plans by some Swiss towns to ban asylum-seekers from some public places.

The BBC's Imogen Foulkes in Berne says human rights groups have likened the plans - which include banning asylum-seekers from swimming pools, playing fields and libraries - to apartheid.

Officials say the curbs, which will also see asylum-seekers housed in special centres, are aimed at preventing tensions with residents.

About 48,000 people are currently seeking asylum in Switzerland. It has twice as many asylum seekers as the European average.

Winfrey's interview is a public relations disaster for Switzerland, our correspondent says.
